IME - Tradition, History and Innovation

Since 1792

The history of IME is an important mark in Brazilian Science and Technology. As the first School of Engineering in the Americas and third in the world, IME contributes to the development of Brazil since its inception. Its mission is to train and improve high level personnel in the scientific and technological fields, besides to cooperate for the progress of the Army and the country.

Its history dates to 1792, when the Royal Academy of Artillery, Fortification and Design was created, by order of the Queen of Portugal, Mary I.

Installed in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Royal Academy was transformed into the Royal Military Academy, on April 23rd, 1811, by order of John VI . Over the years, it received different names and occupied different facilities, being designated as Central School in 1858.

Between 1792 and 1874, all these institutions graduated military officers and military and civilian engineers for Brazil. After this period, Central School was renamed Polytechnic School and turned away from military purposes, training only civilian engineers. On the other hand, military officers began to be trained at the Praia Vermelha Military School.

Under the influence of the French Military Mission, which visited Brazil in the 1920's, Brazilian Army decided to create the Engineering Military School in 1928 to graduate military engineers.

This educational establishment was renamed the Army Technical School in 1934, occupying facilities in Praia Vermelha in 1942.

In 1959, the Army Technical School was merged with the Military Institute of Technology, giving rise to the current Engineering Military Institute (IME).

IME has the mission of training and graduating Military Engineers and carrying out scientific-technological research, aiming to meet the needs of the Brazilian Army in Science, Technology and Innovation.

More than being the birthplace of Brazilian Engineering, IME is a recognized center of excellence, with great national and international prestige, being considered the best engineering school in the country, according to the evaluation of Ministry of Education.
