Scientific and Technological Advances

1822-1889

The evolution of military institutions is closely linked to the technological and scientific advances of their time. In this sense, historically, Brazilian Army has always been attentive and integrated into the social transformation process producing scientific innovations decisive for the fulfillment of its mission.

Evidently, historical transformations and movements encompass most of the Brazilian Army's actuation areas. Based on specific scientific and technological advances, Military Engineering has taken a major role in various armed conflicts in Imperial Brazil, supporting the planning, preparation and deployment of military force. The impact of this participation can be felt not only on the battlefront but also in the process of organizing military engineering throughout the Army's history.

The continuous advance in ordinance matters effectively brought progress and power to the Army, contributing to developing the country and expanding its territory while securing it. Brasil's sovereignty has been linked to the Army's ability to recover, preserve, develop, and produce its own combat equipment in its factories.

Military Engineers carried out the mapping of the territory, enabling the identification of sites conducive to the construction of roads, telegraph lines, bridges and fortifications, which allowed the improvement of troop transport and supply, contributing to the subsequent national integration.

Finally, to delve into the history of the Brazilian Army is also to delve into the scientific and technological advances experienced by the nation. In view of this finding, it is necessary to be attentive to the profuse and characteristic role of military engineering in this process, which, amid its central mission aiming the improvement of the military power of the Terrestrial Force, was also present in several important advances for the expanded progress of the country.
